What is CAUL-CBUA?
A CAUL-CBUA card is a free library card that allows borrowing privileges at university libraries Canada-wide for all staff, students, and faculty registered at Atlantic Canadian institutions.
- Off-Campus borrowers (OCBs) are not eligible.
- CAUL-CBUA undergraduate students cannot take items out from the University of Toronto, the Ontario college of Art and Design, or any Quebec university.
Any staff member, faculty member, or student registered at any institution in Atlantic Canada is entitled to an CAUL-CBUA card provided the patron's library record is in good standing.
- The card can only be obtained from the patron's home institution.
- For example, a patron from UNB or MUN cannot come to SMU to obtain an CAUL-CBUA card. These libraries are not part of the Novanet consortium, thus we would have no way of checking the patron's home library record. The patrons from these libraries must get a CAUL-CBUA card from their own library.
- In the unlikely event that a patron from another Novanet institution came to SMU for a CAUL-CBUA card, we could issue it to, say, a Dalhousie patron. We can do so because at SMU we have access to their library patron records through Aleph.
- As a general rule, send the patron back to their own institution, or ask a supervisor for assistance.
