Lost IDs
Lost IDs are frequently returned to the library’s Circulation desk either from patrons, security or even from Metro Transit.
When a card is turned in, you will need to try to contact the patron as soon as possible. This way the patron can retrieve the card before any attempt is made to have another card issued.
- If a patron comes in to have a new card made because she lost her card, be sure to check the Lost ID box found at the Circulation desk. You should also suggest that she check with Security, to see if it has been turned in there.
When a card is turned in, scan the barcode into Aleph to retrieve the patron’s record.
- Check to see if there is a current phone number or email address.
- Contact the patron to inform them that her ID has been found and can be picked up at the
Circulation Desk. - If you call and get an answering machine, leave the following message: "Hello, this is [insert name] calling from the Saint Mary's Patrick Power Library. Your student ID has been turned in and is being held at our Circulation Desk. Please drop by and claim your ID, at your earliest conveniece.
- Calling the patron is preferable, but the patron can also be emailed by pressing the Letter button beside the patron’s email address. The button can be found in the Address Information section:
Or under 'Global Patron Information':
Once the patron has been contacted, place the ID in the small manila envelopes found at the back of the box. On the front of the envelope, attach a Lost ID slip once it has been filled out. Remember, Patron's Name is recorded as last name first.
File the envelope alphabetically, by last name, in the ‘Lost IDs’ box which can be found at the designated location at the circulation desk.
Confidentiality is a responsibility we must adhere to. When giving out a lost ID, be sure to glance at the photo and match it to the face of the patron you are handing it over to.
