Holds and Recalls
When a patron searches for a SMU item in the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) only to discover that the item required is currently out on loan, there are three options obtain the item:
- Check the OPAC to see if the title is available through Novanet Express from another Novanet library.
- Place a ‘Hold’ on the item: a request placed on an item that is currently out on loan, with no expectation from the requesting patron that the item will return before its due date, but with the expectation that the patron will be notified when it is returned.
- Request a ‘Recall’: the requesting patron can expect the item to return within a 10-day period.
If the item is not available from another Novanet library, the patron will have to consider the due date of the item; thus, deciding if she needs to create a Hold or request to have the item Recalled.
