Recalls
There will be times when a patron needs an item that is currently signed out, and cannot wait for it to be returned by its original due date. In this case, the patron can request a ‘Recall’ of the book.
Some important policies to keep in mind when taking a Recall request:
- We only Recall SMU items.
- All Recalls must be done by the owning library.
- We do not do Recalls for Off Campus Borrowers (OCB’s), BARA patrons or International Baccalaureate (IB) students. However, any other Novanet patron can come to SMU to request a Recall of a SMU item.
- All Recalls must be done in person. This is to ensure there is ‘serious intent’ on part of the recalling patron. We do not want to shorten the loaning patron’s time of the material for someone who could find other material to use.
- A ‘Recall’ request is meant to be an occasional, if not exceptional, event that requires mediation between the requestor and the student with the item. We want to avoid mass ‘Recalls’ by a patron or pair of patrons: this would mean that material could easily be permanently under request back and forth, or that students working in concert could keep material from others.
- The loaning patron has up to ten days to return the book. The patron requesting the Recall should be advised of this, as ten days may still be too late for his purposes. We do not want to take an item back from someone who is actively using it, if the requesting patron will have no use for the material when it is returned.
- Any recalled SMU material must be picked up at the SMU library.
