Counting the Cash
When the Library has closed for the day, and the doors are locked, we begin the
cash register closing routine.
- Count and total all of the monies in the Cash Register drawer (rolled and loose coins, and bills, and the occasional cheque) recording the amounts on the ‘Cash in Register’ form:
- From this total, deduct $350.00 (the next day’s opening float) to arrive at the ‘Net Sales’ (Total Cash – Float = Net Sales).
- Remove the net sales amount from the tray.
- Include as many of the larger denomination bills in the net sales as possible to ensure that we have plenty of five dollar bills and loonies and toonies for the next day.
- Record the amounts and total on a yellow ‘Net Sales’ form.
- Place the net sales cash, and any cheques and budget line forms in a large envelope.
- Use a rubber band or paper clips to hold the bills/cheques together.
- Do not use a staple.
Count the amount remaining in the tray (bills, rolled coin and loose change)
recording them on a white ‘Float’ form.
