Document Delivery Introduction: Novanet Express and Interlibrary Loan
Our Library has two procedures to obtain material from other libraries for patrons to use, a function we call Document Delivery. One of these, Novanet Express (NE), allows our users to identify items on the shelves at other Novanet libraries through our online Novanet catalogue and request that it be brought to Saint Mary's. The other, Interlibrary Loans (ILL) locates a book or article not found in our library system, and brings it here to Saint Mary's for the patron's use.
Novanet Express
Novanet Express is a free system, which features a speedy turn-around time, usually within three days. Library staff should be familiar with the online procedure for making a NE request, be able to help a student place a request and then track the progress of the item. Staff should also know how NE material is processed when it arrives.
The Access Services Department cooperates with Reference staff in advising students on the NE procedure, and we assist Document Delivery in providing the Novanet Express service.

Interlibrary Loan
Novanet Express items circulate on Aleph, under the rules of the owning library. Interlibrary Loans do not circulate through the Aleph system, as they are items found outside our Novanet system, and are therefore processed manually through the ILL department. It is not uncommon for an ILL item to be made available 'For Use in the Library Only'.
There is no longer a charge associated with the delivery of ILL documents. In the rare instance, when the cost of sending a document is excessive, a fee will be negotiated between the patron and the ILL department.
Document Delivery takes sole responsibility for our ILL service, excepting that ILL items are held on Circulation Desk bookshelves, and that we collect any charges owing through our cash register. Still, Access Services staff should be familiar with Interlibrary Loans rules and procedures.
