General Guidelines for Student Assistants
When a Student Assistant is first hired, the department's and the Library's expectations are explained. It is important that all staff understand that we enforce these standards not because we like rules or control, but because the quality of our services depends upon how well we do our jobs.
Supervisory staff will make note of any Student Assistant problems that occur during their shifts. Any such reports are reviewed by the Manager and Assistant Manager of Access Services, and kept in a confidential file. If any follow-up is needed, a meeting will be arranged with the Manager and Assistant Manager, the student assistant, and the supervisor. If a pattern emerges and further discussions about a student's work are required, termination of employment may ensue.
If we are clear about our expectations, we anticipate few unhappy discussions. If you have any concerns about our standards and how they are applied, please raise these questions with your supervisor, or with the Assistant Manager.
You will be given a copy of the Student Assistant Checklist, which is a list of everything we think you need to know to work effectively in the department. The Checklist will be used as a guide during your training and is a useful tool throughout your career with the Patrick Power Library.
The guidelines:
- Be on time for your shifts: you should be ready to work at the designated time, not walking in the door.
- Discuss your shift with your supervisor: clearly communicate what you will be doing when not on the desk. This includes shelving duties and breaks.
- Do not bring personal belongings (book bags and homework), food, or drinks (only water in a covered container is allowed), to the desk. Remember to consult the checklist/shelf reading schedule.
- Encourage your friends and classmates to visit outside of work hours. This includes personal phone calls.
- Please turn off your cell phone during work along with any personal music devices: neither is allowed at the desk or in the stacks.
- Do your best to get all your work done during your shift; it takes strong time management skills. If you are having difficulty completing the assigned duties, please talk to your supervisor.
- When your are signing your hours into 'The Book', please write as clearly as possible, and keep the dates in order.
- We cannot break down your pay into less than 30 minutes. If you find yourself with less than 30 minutes work over your regular shift discuss it with your supervisor.
- Check your mailbox: Everyone who works in the Access Services Department has a mailbox, located in the Circulation office. It is important to check for mail during every shift, and is a great place to keep your Checklist!
