Food for Fines
Food for Fines is a week long event that takes place each winter semester. Most of the Novanet Libraries participate in taking donations for local food banks (both on campus and Metro) as payment of Library fines.
The main points to remember are:
- Patrons may clear up to $20 in Library fines. This does not include lost book replacement charges.
- One food item equals $2 in Library fines.
- Dented tins, food past the expiration date and unsealed packages are not accepted, as well as individual items intended to be bulk packaged (for example, one granola bar from a box of six).
Patrons are also welcome to donate cash. If a patron comes to pay a fine, but does not have any food to donate, they have two options: return with food donations the next visit (but before the campaign ends), or pay cash and donate the money to the Food Bank. If the patron chooses to donate cash, follow the same online procedure as food donations, and put the cash in the designated area (usually in a marked envelope in the safe – check with your supervisor).
