Government Documents (Barcoded)
The steps for checking out a barcoded Government Document are essentially the same as those for checking out a barcoded periodical, which in turn is much like checking out a book.
To start, open up ALEPH and click on the 'Check-out' tab. If ALEPH is not already open, click the icon on the desktop (the login and password are both 'SMUCIRC'), and go to the first tab (F5 on the keyboard), which is the 'Check-out' tab.
The second step is to scan the patron's barcode.
It should be noted that we will not, under any circumstances, check out books to a patron with another patron's ID, or with no ID at all.
With the cursor in the 'Patron Bar' field, scan the barcode on the bottom of the patron's ID card. The barcode is automatically entered and the patron's information will be displayed on the screen.
The cursor will now be in the 'Item Bar' field. Using the same technique used to scan the patron's barcode, scan the barcode on the inside of the back cover of each Government Document.
After the document is signed out, print a due date receipt. The loan period for Government Documents (like periodicals) is always three weeks, no matter what type of patron they are (Undergraduate, Graduate, Faculty, etc.).
The final step is to desensitize the Government Document, rendering it passable through the detectors at the library entrance, without any alarm. To do this, simply rub the spine on the large metal devise (essentially a large magnet) on the desk at each workstation.

- Pay attention to the screen when checking out each Government Document. Sometimes it takes a few moments, so you may miss a document or two if you try to scan another barcode while the system is still working on the first one.
