Options Other Than Repairing an Item
There are three other options: Rebinding, replacing, and discarding.'
Rebinding an Item Instead of Repairing
Sometimes we opt to send an item for rebinding rather than attempting to repair it ourselves. Follow these guidelines when making your decision:
- More than a few loose pages
- The more loose pages, the more difficult to stick them back in neatly.
- Coil bound item
- These items are very difficult to fix, whether it is spine damage or missing pages.
- Any item you feel cannot be neatly or effectively repaired in-house
Replacing an Item Instead of Repairing
If an item is in bad shape, and we do not have another copy, the item will likely be reordered.
The main criteria for reordering are the popularity of the item, and its relevance to our collection. The decision for reordering is made by the Head of Access Services and/or the Head of Collections Development.
Discarding an Item Instead of Repairing
If an item is in bad shape, and has outlived its usefulness to our Collection, it is given to the Cataloguing department to be discarded. The decision for discarding items is made by the Head of Access Services and/or the Head of Collections Development.
