Conversion on the Fly (Item not in System)
Conversion on the Fly is the process of signing out an item when a record does not exist in Novanet.
For this procedure, use the blue forms found in the holder at the Circulation desk.
The call number, author, title, and barcode of the book are recorded on the form followed by the patron's name, ID number, patron barcode, and university affiliation. If there is no barcode, retrieve a new one and affix it to the book. Use this new barcode on the form.
The form must include the due date and the staff member's initials who signed out the material.
All items that require this process are available for three weeks only.
Record the due date on the blue Conversion on the Fly due-date slip and bookmark into the book or give it directly to the patron. This brings attention to the due date, which may be shorter than the patron is accustomed to for SMU items (i.e. Grads, Faculty). No need to print the regular due date slip. Place the Conversion on the Fly form in the designated area at the Circulation desk.
These forms will be collected and used by the staff member responsible for Conversion on the Fly to create temporary records for the corresponding material.
