Theft
All thefts must be reported to Campus Security.
Staff should assist a theft victim as best we can. Taking the stance that a student is responsible for leaving items unattended is unhelpful, and sends a poor message. Although invariably it is too late to retrieve stolen money, wallets and purses usually end up close to the scene of the crime: in washrooms, out-of-the-way study carrels or the stacks. Helping the student by having one or two staff assist in the search is a reasonable level of assistance to offer.
Our register is far less lucrative than most other campus cash caches; still, a villain may be tempted. At the first sign of violence, a weapon, or a serious threat, give the cash to the thief.
Do not attempt to challenge or apprehend the perpetrator. Call Campus Security who will notify the police.
