Inside the Coin Box/Card Reader
This section will help familiarize you with the inside of the coin box/card reader.
The change dispenser returns unused funds deposited in the copier. It is divided into three chambers:
- From the left, the first chamber contains quarters, the second dimes and finally the third contains nickels
- Coins can be added via a slot at the top of each chamber. However, the system is designed to replenish itself from coins deposited by patrons for copying.
- Only when a chamber is 75% full will a coin of that denomination be allowed to fall into the lock box.
The coin box is simply a locked container, which holds the money deposited for copies.
- The box is accessed by a lock on the front of the box
- The coins are removed periodically and brought to the Circulation Desk to be rung in the register as a transaction (see “Cash Register Operation” in the manual earlier in this chapter).
The final component of the coin box is the card reader. Occasionally a copy card will ‘jam’ in this reader. This usually occurs because of a damaged card, but sometimes occurs if a second card is inserted into the reader when there is already one in there. To remove a jammed card:
- Turn the roller located on the left of the reader. This action will force the card out of the reader.
- Once such a card is removed, discard it. It will almost certainly jam again and should not be reused.
