Overdue Holds and Recalls
A due date for an item with a Hold attached is treated the same way as any other regular item on loan. You are, basically, at the mercy of the loaning patron, that he will return the item by the stated due date. One difference is that the loaning patron is unable to renew the item when a Hold is attached to it.
Recalls, on the other hand, are very time sensitive. Therefore, the slips need to be checked on a daily basis, to see if any have not been returned by the new Effective Due Date. If material is not returned by the new due date, immediate action is required.
There is only one a day grace period (as fines need to be at least $2.00 before the system will acknowledge them), before fines will start accruing for overdue Recalls.
The fine rate for overdue Recalls is $1.00 per day, starting with $2.00 on the second day overdue, in conjunction with the regular overdue fines of $.25 per day, which will start after the tenth overdue day. So, if a patron refused to return an item, it is conceivable that he could end up with $40.00 worth of overdue fines (maximum $20 for overdue Recall fines plus a maximum $20 for regular overdue fines), along with having his loaning privileges revoked.

- Call the loaning patron to remind him the book is due back and that fines are accruing. Find out the status of the book and agree on a definite return time.
- Call the requesting patron to apprise her of the situation and assure her that we are still working on retrieving the book. Ask if she still requires the item.
