20 Minutes to Closing
The backup, and any other available Circulation staff members, go to the desk to assist with closing. If staff are working in the stacks, they should cease whatever they are doing and start to assist with the closing procedure. If shelving books, the unfinished cart must be brought downstairs to the cart room.
· A staff member (or two) does a round of the stacks and study areas to let patrons know that we are closing. (It is advisable to start with the study rooms, as these groups often take longer to wind up their activities). It is also advisable at this time to ask patrons at the guest computers to finish their print jobs without delay, as these have to be sorted/counted, and paid for.
Pickups are completed in the lobby and photocopier areas, all items on the pick-up shelf are put away and their numbers recorded on the clipboard. Any material belonging in the Reference room is placed in the designated re-shelving spot.
At about 10 minutes to the hour, the staff member at the desk prepares for closing the cash, while the backup remains to serve patrons and complete the remaining tasks (see “Cash Register Closing Procedure”).
Staff check that all laptops are turned off and plugged-in for re-charging; verify on-line that they have all been checked-in (the easiest way to do this would be to bring up the listing in the OPAC, which will show the status of all the laptops and adapter cords on a single screen).
Staff make sure the desk area is tidy, and that everything is in its place, and that any books, notes, messages, etc. have been forwarded to the appropriate staff members. If there is a problem item, or issue, the relevant staff member has to be informed either by e-mail or a note.
Make sure the laptop cabinet and the Lost and Found items’ cabinet are locked.
