Holds
Holds are interfiled alphabetically by the patron's last name on the Hold Shelf, and distinguished from other items (such as Novanet Express) by a white 'Hold Request Slip' showing out the top of the item. The name of the requesting patron will be written in red marker and clearly visible. When a patron comes to pick up an item on Hold:
- Retrieve the item, by using the patron's ID to verify the name.
- In the ALEPH checkout tab, scan the barcode on the patron's ID card, or enter the patron's ID number manually ('A' number for SMU students).
- A window will pop up informing staff that this patron has an item on Hold available to pick up. Click 'OK':
- Go to the 'Holds Request' node in the Patron tab. Review the requests listed there to ascertain whether there are other Holds or Novanet Express requests ready for pickup at SMU (refer to 'Viewing a Patron's Hold Requests' further in this chapter).
- You may discover that there are items ready to be picked up at other institutions. Inform the patron of their status.
- Continue to check out the item by scanning the barcode and proceeding as for regular checkout (refer to 'Checkout: Books' in this chapter).
By checking out the item, ALEPH will remove the Hold from the patron's account and from the item's record. The item will now show as a loaned item by viewing the 'Loans' node.
