Holds
There will be times when a patron wants a book, but the due date is weeks or months away. If she is in no hurry to have the book returned, but would like to be next in queue for the book, she will need to create a Hold for the book through the Novanet Catalogue.
A patron-initiated Hold may be placed by any Novanet patron for ‘On Loan’ items belonging to any Novanet library.
The important thing to remember is that all Holds have to be picked up at the owning library. Therefore, if a SMU patron creates a Hold for an On Loan STFX book, she would have to go to Antigonish to pick it up when it becomes available.
This is the biggest difference between a Hold request and a Novanet Express request, which delivers the item to the patron’s home institution (Refer to the “Novanet Express”).
A patron cannot place a Hold from the Novanet Catalogue on an In Library item at her home institution. Aleph will not give the patron the option of pickup at her home institution. With no other option except to choose another institution, she will be creating a Novanet Express request to be delivered elsewhere.
A SMU patron must retrieve an In Library SMU item personally. We do not retrieve items from the shelf and place them on Hold. Holds are for items already on loan.
If a patron requests an In Library item at another Novanet institution, the action will result in the creation of a Novanet Express request.
