BARA - Borrow Anywhere, Return Anywhere
All OCB/BARA patrons can now return material borrowed from any library in Nova Scotia – Novanet and Public – to any library in Nova Scotia. The challenge is to discern whether or not the item is a Novanet return or a Non-Novanet return, or if it is an ILL return.
Note: There are no BARA Check Out procedures, as we do not sign out anything but our own material to BARA patrons. Therefore, once a BARA patron has an account set up in Aleph, check out of items to that patron is just like any other SMU book loan check out.

Novanet Items (BARA)
These item are simply checked in, automatically acquiring the ‘In Transit’ Process Status, and then placed in either the Novanet Metro Libraries Delivery bins (via the Inter-University Book Truck) or on the appropriate shelf for Novanet Non-Metro Libraries (which are later packaged and shipped to the owning out-of-town library).
Unable to Find Item Message (BARA)
If you are checking in an item and receive the ‘Unable to Find Item’ message, this can mean one of two things: 1) it is a Novanet (SMU) item that is no longer linked to a record in ALEPH, or 2) it is a Non- Novanet (Public Library) item that needs to be processed through BARA. It is your job to discern which institution the item belongs to and take the appropriate action.
A SMU item should be placed on the ‘Items Not Linked’ shelf on the bookcase at the Circulation desk. Any other item receiving this message will be a Non-Novanet item that will need to be returned to the owning library through the BARA process. These items should be placed on the BARA Return shelf, also on the bookcase at Circ, to be retrieved by the BARA staff member.
